The Fed 50 Automat is a well-built viewfinder camera. It uses a selenium light meter which requires no battery to operate, and couples this with a match-needle display. In automatic mode, the needle reacts to the available light in the scene and automatically selects the correct shutter speed and aperture for a correct exposure. When the user selects the aperture desired, the camera automatically fires at a set speed of 1/30th of a second, allowing control over light and depth of field.

The lens is an incredibly sharp and characterful Industar-81 38mm F2.8, perfect for general use, street photography, and snap shots.

The camera uses the zone focus system in which the photographer selects the distance to subject and fires. The viewfinder displays the selected distance via a needle and diagram system.

It is a decidedly mechanical camera, and feels exceptionally weighty and purposeful.
